The Atlanta NHL team was called the Atlanta Thrashers and they were a professional ice hockey team located in Atlanta, Georgia. They were a member of the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Thrashers began playing in the NHL in the 1999-2000 season and played their home games at the Philips Arena.
The team had limited success during their time in Atlanta, reaching the playoffs just once in their history and failing to win a playoff series. The Thrasher's biggest highlight was when their star player, Ilya Kovalchuk, won the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy for leading the NHL in goal scoring during the 2003-2004 season.
In 2011, the team was sold and moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba, and was renamed the Winnipeg Jets. The Atlanta Thrashers ceased to exist as an NHL franchise and the city of Atlanta has not had an NHL team since then.
